Why Library OPAC Belongs Inside College ERP

Why Indian college libraries should run catalogue, circulation, and public OPAC on the same campus ERP as student records — not a disconnected library silo.

A college library that cannot see whether a borrower is an enrolled student will collect the wrong fine, issue a card to a left student, and fail NAAC questions about learning resources. Library software that ignores the campus ERP creates a second identity system — usually worse than the first.

Dream Campus includes library as a first-class module: catalogue, MARC import, RFID, consortium OPAC, circulation, fines, reservations, and a digital shelf, plus a public OPAC on the institution site. This article is about why that coupling matters for Indian colleges.

Members should be campus members

Students, staff, and (where you allow) public readers are people the institution already knows. Circulation should use the same member record as admissions and HR. When a student completes the programme, library privileges should follow the enrollment status — not a forgotten spreadsheet of card numbers.

Public readers can still exist. They should be an explicit role with explicit limits, not "we created a fake student." Dream Campus treats reader as a real role in campus access, separate from student and staff.

OPAC is a public portal, not a staff screen

Faculty and students search the catalogue from a phone. A public OPAC on the college site is part of how the institution is judged — alongside the apply form. If OPAC is a different vendor with a different login, you will explain two passwords at every orientation.

Keep discovery public and circulation permissioned. That split matches how digital admissions should work: public on the outside, ERP on the inside.

NAAC and library evidence

Learning-resource metrics are painful when holdings, usage, and membership live in a silo. If IQAC has to export CSVs from a legacy library product and paste them into NAAC software, the numbers will lag. A library module inside campus ERP can feed evidence the same way enrollments feed student strength.

What to require from library-in-ERP

  • Catalogue and circulation tied to campus members
  • Public OPAC without a staff account
  • Fines and receipts that accounts can recognise
  • Roles for librarian vs other staff — not everyone is a cataloguer
  • A path for MARC / existing holdings so you are not retyping the stack

Library is one reason college ERP in India should be broader than "admissions plus fees." See Dream Campus modules or request a demo that includes OPAC and circulation on the same student record.
